Hello! Tori here :D
This is an Q&A/update post about Fallen Gauntlet's development progress and how everything is going. If anything in this post is not answered, feel free to contact me with the "Message me" section of the blog on the right. I will try to respond ASAP!
What is this website?
This is the new Fallen Gauntlet blog, here I will post updates on the game's development. These posts will have screenshots, videos, and possibly demos of the game. I will talk about my process of development, what is going well and what is not going well, and game content that I would like to share early ( and maybe some personal slice of life stuff at some point I am not too sure yet :P ).
What about the Discord server?
The Discord server will still be used! The updates channel is going to be replaced with the blog but I will still notify users in the server when new posts are being made.
Why a blog?
I made this blog to give myself motivation to work on the game because having blog readers who can comment on the updates really inspires me to work on the project! Another reason was to use this website domain, I bought it back in September last year but I have not known what to do with it and a blog sounded fun so I thought why not.
Anything new to show from the past month or two?
Quite a lot of new things yes! I gave a presentation on the game and its development process about two weeks ago. In the presentation I talked about the project's history, some challenges I had with the project, and what I plan on doing next. Here is a video that I recorded for the presentation.
I spent a lot of time getting a small demo ready for my presentation which *drum roll...* I am going to release! There are a few small changes that I want to make to it before I release it so please wait a few days. The grapple is in this version of the game so I hope you have fun playing around with it. Other than the presentation not much has been done. I have been busy with school in March but things have slowed down more recently so I hope to have more time to work on the game.
Whats next?
TL;DR, I am going to start working on the game design doc beginning with the story. I also plan on switching engines as well.
I am in the final quarter of my school year so I will mainly be trying to focus on that at the moment but in my spare time for the rest of the school year and over the summer, I will work on a game design document or simply a GDD. A GDD outlines what the whole game is going to be, this includes the story, art style/design, game mechanics/gameplay, level designs, music, etc. A task like this will take me a month or two just to even outline because I have to figure out all of the aspects of the game and even then this is a dynamic document so I will have to revise it multiple times over development. I mainly want to work on the story first for the GDD, I have spent a lot of time working on the grapple mechanic and I haven't gotten around to the game's story as much so I think it would be fun to work on that. Another thing I want to do is switch the game from GameMaker (the game's current engine) to MonoGame and develop my own development tools for MonoGame. The main reason for this is because of some changes made to GameMaker which I do not personally agree with and I do not want to make a big game with GameMaker have to deal with some of the negative changes they make later on.
That is everything I have to talk about as of now. I am excited to start posting on this blog and I hope you all are excited as well. Thanks for reading <3
